A sonic mission for citizen scientists

The ask

Google Arts & Culture, in collaboration with Google Deepmind, wanted to create a tool to
track and monitor biodiversity in forests to aid preservation efforts. The Google bioacoustics team has an extensive library, unmonitored audio clips from the Atlantic Forest and the Amazon.

The mission: create an engaging online experience that’s both educational
and rewarding, providing a space to learn about our forests and take action to protect them.

Roles: UX copy, content design, naming

Catalog the sounds of a virtual forest

We developed a digital experiment inviting nature lovers to help scientists catalog the sounds of the forest, in order to train AI models from Google DeepMind to measure and preserve it.

Our virtual forest hosted hundreds of thousands of sound clips, each ready for an enthusiastic audiophile to identify and label wildlife sounds, earn badges, and contribute to sustainability efforts, one bird call at a time.

Don’t be shy.
